2020/2021 Project Scope
The scope of this year’s work continued to focus on family insights, with an increased spotlight on meeting needs throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and new virtual learning environment. We partnered with schools to host 24 family empowerment events, including drive-thrus, virtual events, and COVID-safe in-person events. Each school also took place in monthly professional development and data meetings as well as a joint professional development session to share resources, insights, and best practices.

Parent Power Financial Literacy Workshop Seriess
In the Spring of 2021, we piloted a virtual financial empowerment workshop series with CommonWealth Charlotte. Presented with the unique circumstances of schooling and working in virtual environments, we co-created a three-part virtual workshop series open to families at all of our partner schools. Families provided initial feedback on the sessions via an interest survey, and if they indicated a need, they were provided with the necessary technology to attend. See below for a data snapshot of the pilot program.
“Thank you for providing these sessions to help educate parents on the power of finance and being proactive on creating generational wealth.”

Lessons Learned
In the 2020/21 school year, amid uncertainty and unprecedented challenges, we identified several strategies for success for successful family partnership work.
- Start the year with a calendar of events + meeting schedule. It’s easier to reschedule something that’s already on the calendar than put it on the calendar last minute.
- An engaged family empowerment committee with representatives across school staff can accomplish a lot with one-hour meetings once per month.
- Make the most of a drive-thru event by distributing and collecting feedback surveys for families.
- Get creative with community partners. Partners can easily participate in virtual events by recording short videos detailing their services.
- Offer multiple options to families: whether that’s event times, grade-level specific sessions, or giving families the option to select sessions that are meaningful to them.

Looking Ahead
In the 2021/22 school year, we intend to focus our efforts on family empowerment PD, financial literacy programming, and grade-level or content-level focus areas.
