Hello! I’m Alex Abisch; an art therapist turned business developer with a passion for innovation in education. I spent my early childhood living in Puerto Rico, where I began as a Montessori student before transitioning to public and private schools in Charlotte, NC. During my undergraduate years at UNCC, I began to explore the relationship between the arts, mental health, and developmental psychology. I gained my enthusiasm for teaching while volunteering as an art teacher at Novant Health’s Arts For Life program serving pediatric oncology. 

In 2012, I earned a merit scholarship to George Washington University, where I obtained my Masters of Art Therapy and Counseling. During this time, I facilitated therapeutic art directives for adult psychiatric patients at George Washington University Hospital. After returning to my hometown of Charlotte, I led an art-based day support program for adults with disabilities. I witnessed how art can promote inclusion by serving as a bridge for marginalized populations. In 2018, I transitioned into corporate relations at The Arts and Science Council, where I learned the value of relationships built on trust, reliability, and communication. After spending time building opportunities across the Charlotte landscape, I progressed to business development at Rebound Behavioral Health Hospital, where I gained a strong understanding of the underlying barriers to mental health and substance abuse treatment across the Carolinas. 

I currently serve as the President of the Board of Lorien Academy of the Arts, where we work to create upward mobility through the arts. During my time with students at Lorien, I’ve recognized how a sense of community, safe environment, and mentorship can positively affect a student’s self-efficacy, confidence, and overall behavioral health. 

SchermCo’s commitment to quality work and creativity is inspiring. Every student needs an advocate, which is why I am excited to join SchermCo in their quest to improve educational opportunities in communities that need them most. I’m eager to learn from the diverse skill-sets of the team and get to know external partners that have benefited from SchermCo’s approach.

I look forward to building upon my current skill set in organizational development and expanding SchermCo’s reach to organizations ready to innovate.
